  1. Water regularly, pull weeds consistently, mow the grass once a week, done deal.

  2. Fertilize it.......I like the new lawn type...........it doesn't burn and just greens it up beautiful.......mow..........clean all the beds and spade them and rake........that's the cheapest things....the yard likes the same things we do........a drink...haircut.......food.....you name it......it will like it.......use and love................have fun and enjoy.......we started in a garden paradise........it's still the place to be.

  3. Generally, when renting, yard maintenance is handled buy the land lord. However, your lease agreement should tell you. If I were you, I'd send your land lord a bill for whatever yard upkeep you have to do.

  4. It really depends on if you are talking about a grass lawn, what type of grass it is (bermuda, fescue, bluegrass, a mix, etc.) and what part of the country you are in.

I'm in Oklahoma with a bermuda lawn, and I never water it.  If it gets too hot and dry in the summer, the grass will brown up, but it comes back just fine as soon as the weather cools or a rain comes, and I haven't wasted all that good water the city spent so much money to treat so it would be fit for humans to drink.

I also never fertilize the yard, but simply mow with a mulching mower and leave the clippings behind, which decompose and nourish the lawn.

No matter how often you mow, don't mow the grass too short.  Consider the implications of fertilizers/weed killers before using them.  They are carried by rain runoff into the streets, then into streams and rivers where the fertilizer causes excess algae that can rob water of oxygen and contribute to fish die-offs.  The weed killer can cause cancer in many aquatic animals, and trace elements of this can be found in drinking water even after treatment.

  5. Well first of all do you have an agreement with the landlord as to who does what?

The grass needs to be cut regularly, but also needs fertilizer, etc.  You need to ask your landlord how this has been maintained up until you moved in.  Then you can work out the details.  If the former renter took care of it and your landlord doesn't know, then go to a store like Home Depot/Lowe's and ask about lawn care.

  6. It all depends on what you have in your backyard.  If you’re concerned about the lawn, you can putdown a fertilizer.  I'd recommend a 16-16-16, that'll promote the color, roots and health of the lawn.  If you have any flowers, you’re kinda in a weird position because different flowers need different things.  For typical annual or perennials you could probably just get away with using a color boost fertilizer that they sell at most any home depots.  Then follow the directions on the back of the fertilizers as to how much to use and how often.  If you use too much of something with nitrogen  you'll risk burning the roots.  You can tell how much nitrogen a fertilizer has by looking at the front of the bag and seeing the three numbers.  The first number is going to be the nitrogen, the second phosphorus and the third is potasium.

Mow the lawn once a week and when you water your garden, a good way to make sure that your watering enough is to make sure you’re watering about 1/2" of water 2-3 times a week.  More if it’s hot out.  A good way to check is to put a cup or pan on your lawn when you start watering and measure how much time it takes for the pan to fill 1/2".

Remember, overall Mother Nature is forgiving so there is room for some error.

Oh! One more thing, don't use manure.  Since it does have alot of nitrogen in it, it’s harder to control and you risk burning the plants.

I'm sure you'll do great!  Good Luck!

  7. I use a in-ground sprinkler system to water the lawn

for 25 min every other day.

I mow the lawn once a week with the mower set between 3 to 3 1/2 inches.

I also hire a guy to come and do the chemical stuff to kill the bugs and fertilize.
