patrick gives the same advice i would . you may also want to talk to the owner (landlord ) and he may give you some tips on the house . seeing you are renting , it would be in his best intrests to fill you in ,as you would then take better care of his investment .  good luck on your new place .

Your furnace, and make sure the filter is replaced every month, Your pipes and ducts are down there, the electrical panel, Maybe you have a sump pump, Thats about all the basics.
