I haven't run a half before. Just a 5k. I would like to know any sort of information you may have. I am 14 years old, and me and my older sister just got into this stuff. What are some foods, breathing tips, shoe tips, clothing tips, etc.? Thank you.

  1. Train to run downhill.  Long sections of the Boston Marathon are downhill and that has greatly affected some of the world's best marathoners who did not know that you actually need to train your muscles to run downhill.

Here's a nice, narrated guide to running resources on the web; it was written by a 23yo elite runner who really knows her stuff.  Read the links she recommends and you'll know everything you need to know.

  2. food-pasta

    breathing-mouth, relaxed

shoes- if you can, get spikes but remeber to bring your regulars to warm up in or if you want to use them for a race.  asics are great shoes.

clothing- check the temp before you go, and remeber, you will feel hotter running then it is outside.

check out www.runnersworld.com  it will give you tips.

runners world is also a really good magazine to get.

go to the library or border(or another book store) to read somerunning books

    pace yourself.

  3. Get a subscription to Runners World magazine or get it at the store. There are other runners magazines too. There is a ton of info to improve your running there or at their website. See if there is a local running club in your town, talk to other runners and see what they think. If you are local to the race, look into training programs in the area. I used to live in Utica, NY home of the Boilermaker  race, 9.3 mile run and there were training runs sponsered by a local gym you could attend. Get shoes from a store other than in the mall, one who specializes in running shoes. They know what you need, based on your foot shape and pronation etc, worth the price for sure.
