I am scared about getting my braces off. Can anybody take me through the process of getting them off? Also, how do you know when it is time to get them off? Thanks!

  1. your dentist will notify you about 1 or 2 appointments ahead of time =D

Well you go in and sit in the chair as always! haha the ortho will look at your mouth one last time just to make sure everything is golden and ready to go. he will remove the wire. Then, the fun begins. He will start to pry the brackets off. It doesnt hurt too bad, but you do feel a lot of pressure, it hurt the most for me on my bottom  4 front teeth and my top 2 front teeth. once he finished taking the brackets off he  will take off the anchors, this part really isnt bad at all! just a little wiggle and POP! they are outta there!

after he rids your mouth of the metal we will start to sand off all of the glue. not bad. you barely feel a thing. he will look around and scrap off any plaque you might have, fit you for your retainer (gah, i always hated those molds!). and maybe put a permanent retainer on ( just a wire that gets glued to the back of your teeth. very simple, very painless!

good luck! its not bad, i wouldnt be scared! be excited! i know i was!!

  2. Your dentist will tell you when you are ready to get them off. But, there is nothing to worry about =) They take off the wire that goes across your teeth then they take this thing and squeeze the brackets off with them. Then they have to scrape the glue off. Totally painless!! For me it took like less than 30 mins. Then you get to look in the mirror and see how great your teeth look. Then you can have gum!! That was the thing I was most excited for. Then you get to eat whatever you want =)

  3. Your ortho can tell when its time by looking closely at your straightness and jaw alignment. Sorry, that's all I can help.

  4. Hey don't sweat it! This is what you've been waiting for right? I can't talk you through the process but there were certain things I do remember when I got mine off. The ortho. unscrewed/un-tightened the braces on each tooth, therefore relieving the connecting wire. I don't remember how the doc gets the individual metal pieces/braces off of your teeth but I don't remember it being painful. They have to get that cement glue off of your teeth too. You'll look great when you get them off. I remember that was one of the most memorable days of my life. I couldn't wait to show my teeth off after 3 years! This procedure is nothing major. Trust me, I smiled a lot and you will too.

  5. Congratulations on being close to getting your braces off! Your orthodontist will know for sure when it's time to remove them and will hopefully not take them off until your teeth are perfect. There isn't a set amount of time to go by, since everyone is different.

Normally, the bracets are removed by a "debond plier" or "bracket removing plier" (same thing). Basically, it catches under the edges of the brackets and "pops" them off. If you've even had a bracket come off during treatment, you'll know it usually doesn't hurt. Bands are eased off a little at a time, but not painful. The discomfort shouldn't be more than when you get new wires or adjustments.  The remaining adhesive (glue) is removed with a bur and handpiece. It's a small drill-bit looking bur that only glides over the surface of your teeth until the adhesive is gone. When it's finished, your teeth with be polished and smooth!!!  Good luck!!  We have a party at my office with anyone gets their braces off!!

  6. it is nothing to be upst about it does not hurt at all just presure when they r taking the metal fittings out. you will be so excited to see yourself with out them you wont even notice and the denist will tell u when you will get them off most of the time it as least 3 years hope this helped.

  7. It's pretty simple and painless, it feels a little weird at worst.

Basically they just pop the little brackets right off. I have my 3 front teeth capped and it didn't do any damage to them so there's nothing to worry about in that respect. Once they come off they clean the extra glue stuff off and your all done. They'll do a mold so they can fit you with a retainer (your probably more then used to this by now.

The only thing that was weird when I got them off is my teeth looked really big. Apparently this is really common though, and all in your head lol. So don't be shocked if it seems like that.

Oh that, and running your tongue along your teeth is really fun. Oh and eating apples !!! that's awesome too.
