Can't you just use the Canadian phone book. The chances are that your relative is alive and well. We research the ancestors from much further back in time who are no longer with us. Over here in the UK we are bound by the DPA, which means that we aren't allowed to go searching for someone elses information, sorry.

I'm afraid it's a misconception that everyone's family tree is already done for you and all you have to do is plug in your name and pull it up. With good records and a lot of organization, you should be able to find each generation (one-by-one) in about 3 months' time. Start with Census, immigration and military service records, as well as birth, marriage and death records. You're blessed by having the Canadian record system behind you. They're very well organized and much of what you'll need is available for free online.
