  2. Since you did not include a country.. I'll have to go with the assumption that your family/ ancestor is included in the first answer.

    Your road block MAY be that your focus is looking for a "family", instead of facts, relating to an individual.  From experience, I have seen that puzzle pieces are likely to to be many places, but with a different approach.

    If you descend from Peter, you now know that he was an immigrant, and you know from where. The challenge is WHICH TYPE of records might there be? I am going to guess he was naturalized.. that means, there is a file.. but it is not likely to be ONLINE.  You need to exhaust all US sources.  Internet is just the tip of the iceberg.

    Once you find the exact location of his birth, then you switch to learning what records exist in that country, and which may apply to him. I am subscribed to a very active Polish list, including several persons who live in Poland.

    If this is your ancestor above, zero in on explicit facts about him.
