  1. My experience has been you always keep the liscense plate for a new car. Now I have only traded in my car once, and the plates are special (almost vanity), so that may have effected it. Easiest thing to do would be to ask the dealership you are selling to about it.

  2. you do not give the plates to the buyer-- once you sell the car, and draw up the bill of sale, the car is officially the buyers. your plates are no longer good on that vehicle and must be removed and brought back to the RMV.--  you only keep the plates if your trading in your car for another--   ( in Mass)

  3. The plates always go with the vehicle. The buyer is responcible for keeping the tag up to date. The plate is like a barcode for the vehicle. One of the few ways the plate will change is if you get a private plate, even then, the original stays under the drivers seat for easy access in case the officer needs to see it.

  4. go to madmv.com...every state is differnt...in VA where i am..you keep you plates if u want,,,get new,,or sell/give them to new owner...just tell vadmv what ur doing..[and pay them lol]

  5. The best way to know the right answer is to check with the MV dept in MA.  Google the site and check out.

As far as I understand, the plates are given to you and not to the car.  If you are not buying another car, please return the plates to the RMV.

    Hope this helps.
