  1. scrubs will be given to you in the OR, you usually can wear make up lightly applied in the OR however due to HIPAA you will have to have a consent from the patient in order to be in the OR.

  2. Wear whatever you want (you should know what this entails) because you will be given scrubs for the OR. Comfortable shoes are INVALUABLE. Dansko brand clogs are a popular choice among hospital workers across the board (Crocs, too). Just try to look presentable because you probably won't be in the OR all day and you will be surrounded by professionals.  Makeup is typically fine so long as it's not distracting. And be aware that you probably won't be able to touch it up.

  3. If you are unsure...a white top and black pants will always be a safe bet. With black tie shoes. Cloggs are popular.

Keep the makeup natural/neutral...black mascara, abit of light pink blush, and light pink lipstick/lipgloss is plenty.

If by chance you have long hair (below shoulders). Wear it back in a low ponytail, braid, or a low bun.

Earrings:  posts are always best. Or small 1 inch hoops. Not too  many or none rings (except wedding rings) and or bracelets.

Use a bath soap with fragrance (smell to it), and eliminate the perfume.

  4. You need to ask either the neurosurgeon or whoever it is that set up your shadowing experience what you should wear and when--the surgeon may do rounds in scrubs, but students (of any kind) are usually expected to dress professionally (office-type wear), and definitely if you are shadowing the surgeon on office hours.

If you are going to be allowed to come into the OR, you may need scrubs.  Hospitals vary on whether they will allow you to bring in your own scrubs but all of them can provide disposable paper scrubs if you need them.   Again, you should ask and not just show up wearing them.

My advice would be to wear shoes that you are comfortable in for all sites, and absolutely do not wear heels into the OR.  They have booties you can use to cover your shoes, but there is not often a chance to sit down.

Wearing makeup in the OR is not a problem.  You'll be wearing a mask, though.  ;-)
