I am taking a plane trip for a school camp and are extremly nervous. I am leaving preaty soon (like 2 hours) so I need a quick answer. It is from perth to melbourne (3hr and 30 min) then to canberra (1 hr) and it is a midnight flight. Any tips on staying calm. Preferably no drugs however caffeine is ok.

  1. Just try to breathe deeply and remember flying is the safest way to travel. Read a book or a magazine to distract you.

  2. I completely understand, I was very nervous the first time I flew.  As far as "no drugs" are concerned you are completely right, and caffeine is a big no no also as it will only further stimulate you, increasing your tendencies to be nervous.  I know, it's not always comforting to think about traveling thousands and thousands of feet above the ground (probably not helping right now), but flying really is very safe.  More than anything, you will probably be nervous upon taking off and landing.  Taking off can be fun...but it seems to be the most stressful for most people.  When your plane gains speed, remember to breathe deeply, and try closing your eyes.  Refrain from gripping your seat or arm rests, as this will only serve to tense your muscles and cause your body to naturally feel less relaxed.  Tell yourself over and over again in your mind that you will be safe, and don't forget to enjoy the experience.  Once in the air, and ipod or other music device with calm music will be very helpful, but all electronic devices must be turned off during take off and landing.  If you have a window seat, try looking out at the stars.  I flew less than a week ago, and I really enjoyed stargazing so far above the ground!  Also, strike up conversation with people around you.  You'd be amazed at what you can learn from people just by being friendly, and the talking will also help to calm your nerves.  Treat landing just as you did the take off, and you will be fine.  Don't forget gum! The only unpleasant part of flying that I've discovered is that my ears tend to pop...most peoples' do.  Since it's late, you might want to bring a small pillow for some shut eye; It's impossible to be too afraid when you're dreaming!  Good luck, I'm sure you will be fine.  Have fun at camp!
