I am starting a new job, and I sometimes have trouble getting past the small talk with coworkers. I am wondering if there are any ways that people may have to overcome small talk and become the friendly-everyone wants to be around-coworker?

  1. I can relate to your situation. I'm kind of shy and my new job has a big close knit staff. I was really apprehensize at first, but now things are great. The best advice I can give you is to just give it time and be yourself. Things may feel awkward with your new co-workers at first, but if you just relax and try to be yourself, you'll fit right in in no time.

For me, humor works well. People always think I'm quiet at first, but once you're around people long enough, you feel more comfortable making jokes and it gets easier to interact. I'd also advise that you hang around your co-workers in groups if possible. Large groups tend to dissuce awkward feelings and you'll feel less pressure to make small talk. Soon enough you'll feel more comfortable interacting on a one on one basis. Good luck!

  2. word of advice!!! dont work at a fast food resturant as a first job. get used to a slower job that is flexible hours. then when you feel ready go crazy on any job you want.
