  1. you will have to pay emergency tax until your new tax code is sorted, if they wanted to check what previous job you was doing they would check it with your previous employer

  2. You have a week or so before they need your P45.

Well, you're a bit of a numpty about lying. I wouldn't worry too much - I'm sure your new boss has better things to do than scour your P45 for details. In any case, the P45 only has how much you were paid in total, not how much per month etc.

Yes, I suppose they could check with the Inland Revenue, but not sure if the IR could supply that info or even if your boss could be bothered to.

Not a lot you can do, to be honest. Just bite the bullet and see if your boss notices. Simple as that.

If you don't supply a P45 you will pay base-rate tax (about 22% - but I stand to be corrected) and increase your boss's suspicion.

  3. you can fill out a P46 which will put you on emergency tax, until your P45 is available or you are given a new tax code

  4. New employer will complete form P46 for you, which you can sign to say Cafe Nero is your only job, if it is. You will, however go on a month 1 basis code, which means you won't get any possible repayment which may be due to you until after tax year's end in April.

It is possible that when form P46 is processed in tax office that staff may pick up employer's copy form P45 details from your record, and issue notice of coding to your new employer with these figures on, to restore you to a cumulative code number. This is all the information HMRC will give to employer, even if he asks.

  5. Your new employer can request a new p45 from the Inland Revenue
