I am stopping by Bologna to Modena. What is the Taxi fare like? How far is it? Can I drive with US license?

Can't address the cost of taxi or exactly how far it is (not far), but I can tell you that you will need an International Driver's License to rent a car in Italy.  You can get one at any Auto Club (AAA) store or many other places for about $15.00.

Alternatively, many people take the train in Italy.  That would probably be your cheapest and easiest option to travel from Bologna to Modena.
