I am studying abroad in England next year and can't find a straight answer to this question:?

I'll be taking my US cell phone and I'll be recieving a UK cell phone; is there any way I can text to friends in the US from either of those?

you should be able to text from the US cell phone as long as you type the area code in front of the other person's number. I'm not so sure about the UK cell phone though because, well, I've never seen people text people in the US with forgeign phones. but i hope that answered your question.

Yes, but it's very expensive. Calling the US costs about $1/minute. You should look into Vonage. You can buy a wifi phone and for $30 month, call most places fo free. No texting but cheap calls to keep in touch. Have fun!

Yes, you can.  Of course, it will be expensive to use the US phone in the UK as you will be international roaming all the time.

If you have a gsm phone you can purchase a sim card for they're system and put some time on it.  

Other than that you can call your provider and find out if they have agreements for service with the UK providers. Also watch out for these roaming costs you could come back with a monster bill.

I would just get the UK sim card myself. go to a cell store there.

I studied abroad in London last year. A sim card from the UK wouldn't go in my U.S. cell phone (they are different shapes)

You have 3 options:

1) Use your US cell and pay the abroad plan fees. You can text in the US or UK but fees for UK would apply for the international factor.

2) Get a cheap pay as you go UK cell phone- Carphone Warehouse is the best place for that. Super affordable while in the UK- you can call/text US- it is extra, but its all on the pay as you go- just use the country code first

3)If your US cell phone has a data plan- (for internet etc.) pay your provider the international plan for data while you are gone, and still get a pay as you go UK cell for calls. This way you have your internet but save money on calls

2 or 3 are the best options depending on your phone
