  1. The easiest way to stay in the country is to apply for the International Graduates Scheme (IGS) visa which you can apply for as long as you have completed your degree (even if you haven't graduated yet). It allows you to stay in the UK for 12 months. From this visa, if you fit the criteria, you can extend your stay with a Highly Skilled Migrant Worker visa which can lead towards permanent residence.

To be granted leave under IGS applicants must:

    - Have successfully completed at a UK institution an approved course

    - Intend to work during the period of leave

    - Be able to maintain and accommodate themselves and any dependants without recourse to public funds

    - Intend to leave the UK at the end of their stay (unless granted leave under another scheme)

The only problem arises if you are studying in the UK under the sponsorship of someone else. If your studies are sponsored by a government or scholarship agency, you will need to submit with your application a letter from your sponsor that gives their permission for you to apply under IGS.

The cost for a postal application is £395, and the cost for a premium (in person) application is £595.

I am on a similar scheme to this (the Scottish version) and waited until closer to when my student visa expired to apply as the 12 months of the visa are from the date of application. I recommend using as much of your student visa time as possible, so leave yourself about 1.5-2 months from the end of your student visa to apply so you have enough time for your application to process.

    Good luck!
