  1. There are several skills that are invaluable.  You need to know your product, your competition, your customer, and yourself.  If you have faith in all of those, you will succeed.

  2. The most important thing to remember about sales is. All you have to do is sell yourself  and you can sell anything . In general most stores sell basicly the same items . In essence people buy the salesman. One trick to use is . If a person asks how you are tell them that you doing fantastic no matter how you really feel . People respond positively to a positive attitude. Also the customer is NOT always right they just happen to have the money you want them to spend.

  3. brush up on the actual language you are required to speak!

salesmanship isn't about convincing the customer that they really, really, really need the product. it's about eliminating any and every excuse for not wanting to purchase the product.

think up any and every reason why the average person would not want the product.....such as.....they don't have enough money, they have no room for it, it's not an attractive color, etc. then come up with each and every argument for why that isn't an excuse for not purchasing your product. you need to convince your customer that having the product will enhance their life.

  4. Pretend to be friendly. This is the first step to any kind of sales.

Sound your nicest and begin the conversation with the assumption that the person you're selling to is interested in your pitch. It doesn't matter if you're offering help getting a product down, finding the correct size, selling over the phone, or pushing cars. Whatever it is, your customer wants it and you are there to show them why.

Approach with confidence. Don't assume that people can tell you're a bad sales person. Don't let them know that you don't have total faith in yourself. Being self-effacing is tempting because it covers you in case you make a mistake, BUT it does not make customers trust you. Self confidence (and correct product knowledge) will allow you to appear to know what you are doing. If you get into a situation where you don't know the right answer, immediately tell your customer that you're not sure and that you will be right back with the information or if you're not on commission, call over an associate who can help.

The technique I've had the most success teaching sales people with is to act. Put on your best impression of a great sales person. Just because you're not personally outgoing, friendly, well-spoken, and confident doesn't mean you can't pretend to be. Once you see the positive results you will get with this attitude, you can tailor it to perfection and turn it on and off with a switch. Summon the image of the best salesperson you've seen in action. Then commence your best impression of them and approach customers.

You can sell however you choose. A customer doesn't know you personally and you can become whoever you want in their eyes. Even a great salesperson.

  5. know your product and know the competition...i work at a bank and i have to make a lot of sales. that is the best advice and the easiest.

  6. Know the products inside and out.  Read any and all literature available on the product.  Build repore with the customers.  Ask open ended questions that invoke a response that exceeds the usual yes or no answers.  Role play with fellow co-workers to build confidence.  Put yourself in the customers shoes.  Sell them only what they will need.  If a customer knows you're not going to try and sell them a $500 product when all they need is a $250 product then they'll feel comfortable coming back to you in the future.  Always be pleasant and curteous.  Wear a million dollar smile.
