I am taking a gap year before college so that I can increase my chances and also 'spice up' my resume to seem more impressive. Could anyone share any ideas as to what should best be done? Thank you so much.

  1. There are a lot of service opportunities through organizations and churches (non-mission work through churches if being a missionary isn't for you).  There are a lot of places in other countries that need help, often in the form of volunteer teachers.  I must warn you, though, that such a commitment should not be undertaken for the purpose of making yourself look good on paper--colleges can see right through that, I promise.

  2. A gap year is a break from school and anything school related. If you want to impress an Ivy League school then just do something now to impress them now. Your gap year should be used to relax. Doing all of that during the gap year kind of contradicts the purpose of a gap year.

  3. if you can afford it, travel and do community service (this always looks good and makes you look worldly)

  4. travel abroad, find a cure for aids, live in africa, travel to south america and help poor people while publishing articles in undergraduate magazines impress IVY league.  But the truth is that you may need to consider other colleges before IVY league.  Depending on your GPA, etc.  Be realistic, there are alot of decent colleges out there.  Figure out what you want to do first.

  5. The key to getting into an ivy, once you have the 4.0/2250, is to truly excel in one activity. They want to see you take a passion and go all the way. So focus on whatever activity you will be highlighting in your application and take it to a new level.
