Part of my assignment is to list 8 subjective statements and 8 objective statements and how would I correct the subjective stmts in order to convey objective information. I teach 3-4 year olds and I am assuming this is to do with behavior and/or general observations.

  1. With regards to what? Please explain further.

  2. Think of objective statements as "only the facts".  If four people are observing the child, they would all say they saw the exact same thing.  For example:

    Objective:

    Tony counted to twelve.

Sasha ran across the yard, picked up the ball, and threw it towards the hoop.

    Morgan took three steps today.

    Allan named the letters b, d, g, h, j, and m.

No arguments - everyone would be able to verify exactly the same thing in all of those statements.

Subjective statements contain judgements or interpretations.

    For example:

Tony is a smart child.  He counts well.

    Sasha likes to play basketball.

Morgan doesn't walk very well yet.

    Allan is beginning to read.

The words "smart", "well", and "likes" are judgement terms.  Tony is smart compared to who?  He counts well - what does that mean -  that he can count to 10 or 100?  How do you know Sasha likes to play basketball? Maybe the ball interested her only that day.

Be careful about labeling "best" friends, "hyper" kids, "nice" kids, etc.  Those terms slip into observations so easily and they are subjective terms.

    Hope that helps.

  3. 1. Angry (example of objective would be "yells and cries")

2.Likes school (objective would be "moves from center to center, plays with friends, participates in group activites)

    3. Hyper-active (objective would be does not stay on task, does not complete activites)
