Why do people think it is wrong for a someone to get a more harsh punishment for assaulting/killing an officer?

Do they not understand that we put our lives on the line and therefore deserve to have the criminals respect.

A criminal is more likely to give up if he knows that injuring a officer of the law is a harsher punishment.

  1. I'm thinking either you are NOT really an officer or you are a brand new officer with an off-kilter idea about your career choice.  Criminals do not care that "we" put our lives on the line.  Just because "we" put our lives on the line doesn't automatically mean "we" deserve respect by everyone.  You will find when you give respect you will also get respect, and yes, even from a criminal.  A criminal also does not care that he could get a harsher punishment for injuring or killing a police officer, so they are not more likely to give up (if you have ever been in a resisting, you would know that).  As for why people think it's wrong for those who hurt/kill police to get a harsher punishment, I think you are generalizing based on "your" possible experiences.  Most people want harsh punishments for all criminals who hurt or kill anyone, but they don't want society to value one person's life more than another's because of the job they have.

  2. I have no idea.

  3. It's a perception people have that you weren't born an officer, you chose to become one. That's the unfortunate part of your job. If a criminal commits an assult on an officer that's off duty, with way does the law lean?

Does a criminal get a worse sentance if he steels from a poor than from a rich? It's pretty much the same difference. The law is blind, and for assulting an officer, it's a whole other article, so the criminal just gets more charges against him. It doesn't always give more punishment (unfortunately) but the law is there for that reason no?
