I am the mod of a group in which the owner has dropped out of sight for over a year. How can I gain ownership?

If the owner gave the moderators all the privileges to taking care of the group with the exception of deleting it then the moderator can take care of the group as if they were an owner.

Otherwise the only thing that one can do is to try again to get in touch with the owner to find out about changing ownership or starting a new group.

Unfortunately, you can't because the owner himself / herself has to transfer the ownership. You have to contact him / her for this issue.
