I am thinking about working as a temporary teacher in Freeport. I do not know what the teacher's salary is as of yet? How is life in Freeport vs. in the U.S? What is the cost of living for a single person? How can I get info on rental/housing properties? Is rent expensive? What is a teacher's salary like in Freeport? Are there any "clean" extracurricular activities that young adult can engage in? Feel free to provide any further info.

Thanks.

  1. sucks big ballz because freeport is one of the dead towns. their is no where to work(or a job that doesn't pay good) houses are expensive, food is expensive and is no a good quality at all.

you should move to abaco or just stay in america

i know this because i just moved from the bahamas and moved to america because of all these problems.

ps the teachers salary suck well only if you r single and only taking care of yourself.

apartments are expensive and houses also . freeport has no exciting events and has nothing to do because every place is closing down

  2. First, you'd need to find out what the immigration laws are for the Bahamas.  You might not be allowed to work there, probably depending on whether they need teachers with your qualifications.

Search for an official Bahamas government website and you should be able to find out what you need to know.

  3. If you are independantly wealthy it might not be such a bad idea, the teaching profession dosent pay so well in the Bahamas in my veiw , I lived there for 5 years as an American citizen, my mother-in-law is a Bahamian citizen and a teacher, she quit just walked away from it to cut her losses after 13 years, she now resides In the USA and has been here for about 5 years has no intentions of returning on a permanant basis. Rental housing is ungodly expensive as well as everything else the islands have no income tax however you pay duty at the retail point on just about each and every item that enters the country from toilet tissue to toothpaste and being accustomed to the prices here in the states you'll feel as if you are being raped each time you purchase gas or grocery, so far as "clean" fun theres so much to do its unbelievable especialy if you like the outdoors, I had lots of fun & made many friends, however I strongly recommend that you take a familarization trip first before you make any long term plans, its not well publisied however crime is a Very Big problem especially shooting deaths even though the island is supposed to be gun free. Also check on the other islands of the Bahamas you'll find the out islands very laid back but the activities are limited. Back to the expenses of life in the islands BEC thats Bahamas Eletric Company as well as Batelco this is the Bahamain telephone company these outfits are government owned & their rates for service are pretty stiff and they have no competition its them or nothing, the two major grocery stores are Supervalue & City Market they have no mercy at the register I'd like to suggest that you pick up some Bahamian newspapers like The Punch or The Gaurdian to see for yourself some of what I'am trying to convey to you. There is so much more I'd like to tell you but I dont want to bore you with all these minor/major details but if you want to know more give a shout ...cessnaflight@yahoo.com

  4. You can't just go there and be a teacher.  They have strict laws for foreigners working there.  And, expect to be poorly paid if you are lucky enough to get permission to work.  The cost of living is very expensive and there isn't a lot to do there.  So, make a lot of friends because getting together on the weekend is about all there is to do.
