I am thinking about using a metal detector for the first time. What tips can you give me?

As for a starting point, do you live close to the ocean or a forest? Getting used to the changing tones for different types and sizes of metals is the most difficult part. What you think is a large chunk of gold may turn out to be a railroad spike!  You will want a sturdy pair of shoes, comfortable clothes, a canteen and a canvas sack for all your treasures. Enjoy your new hobby, remember that the walk is just as important as the discoveries!
