  1. Im a Brittish immigrant living in Calgary.  I love it here.  There is lots of work in the cunstruction industry and most areas of the city are great for school and to live in.  Like everyone else has said the cost of living is high but also high demand for workers.  Check out these sites for homes and jobs!

    Good Luck and Welcome!

  2. I predict the only thing you'd miss here is the ocean. If your wife agrees with you then do it before your kids are too old and don't want to move. If you're not sure, try a vacation first. I predict you'll wish you'd done it sooner. We'll keep a spot for you. Hurry.

  3. Calgary has a booming economy and there is a shortage of skilled workers in every profession.  Calgary has faced incredible growth driving the cost of living sky high though.

The quality of schooling varies from school to school.  Although there is a standard curriculum to follow, some schools consistently produce higher scoring students than others.  (The area of the city has a lot to do with this.)  I have experienced this first hand because I grew up in Calgary and attended Kindergarten through Grade 12 here.

As far as the attitude towards, the British, I would have to say it depends.  Calgary is in the heart of red neck country.  Unfortunately if you are non Caucasian, you may face prejudice and discrimination.  I am a first generation Canadian born visible minority and still face discrimination in this day and age.

I am not familiar with every city and province but I have heard that Winnipeg is a very tolerant  city with good schools.  The cost of living is the as high there.

I would suggest that you contact companies to see if they are looking to hire.  If they can not find workers here then they could aid in getting you here more quickly.  Take a look at whether your skills will transfer over.  Many professionals have a difficult time with getting work in their areas because they are required to undergo "Canadian" training.  British education is more recognized though than many other countries so this may not be the case for you.  However, because our standards may be different than yours, you may have to apprentice first.  Check into this before coming.

  4. There is plenty of work in Calgary but the cost of living is the 2nd or 3rd highest in Canada.  The Saskatchewan economy is about to experience an oil boom.  I would suggest you settle there before the cost of living there rises in a couple of years from now.  I would also suggest that you get your application to immigration in as soon as possible, as it takes up to two years to process, if everything is in order.

We welcome people of all nationalities and religions.

    Good luck.
