  1. First of all, you need a HDTV. You can play the HD-DVD player or blu-ray on a standard TV because HDTV & standard TV are different technology. First, buy a HDTV that you can afford.

    Good luck!

  2. absolutely a pointless waste of money. without an hd tv, there will be absolutely no difference in quality. now, if you get an hdtv i would say that an hd or blueray player is a must (with HDMI cables) but  otherwise its a waste of 3-5 hundred dollars

  3. It might look better than what you are used to.  It depends on the quality of your standard definition TV.

I had a Sony XBR Wega that I bought the year before they went to HD... I was heartbroken that mine didn't handle 480p or better.  I was surprised that when HD content was downconverted to 480i, it looked great* on my TV.  Some of my friends had lesser quality standard definition TV's, and no matter what signal they sent, it still looked bad on their TV.

I'm wondering why you'd get an HD player before you got an HDTV, but I'm sure you have your reasons.  If I was in the market to replace a DVD player and didn't have an HDTV, I would buy an HDDVD player or a PS3.  There's no sense in buying a regular DVD player these days.

  4. hd is awesome. go for it.

  5. You need an HDTV to get the full effect.
