  1. If you love nature and the out door open spaces, then I suggest you make sure you see Kakadu National Park up in Darwin. You have the crocodile boat cruise and get to see the crocodiles and watch them being fed. There's the aboriginal art work on the rocks and caves to see, along with all the other national parks which some have waterfalls and a place to swim.

  2. camp or use youth hostels.. cheap but usually pretty good.

if you're trying to avoid spending a heap, sydney is generally considered to be very expensive... for example, parking there costs many many times what it does in canberra...

  3. Sydney, the Great Barrier Reef, Alice Springs, Brisbane, Perth

They have plenty of cheap hotels - or just camp out.

Remember though, Australia is as large as North America, so it's like trying to see the USA - difficult to do in one trip.  You can spend your whole time in the Sydney area and still not see and do all you can do there.

  4. Western Australia should be cheaper. Can stay in Perth city and rent a car to drive along the coastline to Fremantle, and South Western part. Visit the wildlife zoos to see koala bears, kangeroos, wombats, tasmania devils; go islands to see seals lazing on the shore, penguins, pelicans. Take a boat ride to discover wildlife dolphins that will follow boats... It's just like watching documentary about wildlife when I was in Western Australia.for a 5 day self drive tour. We went to Waverock that has many striking colours on the big rock itself in the desert area. That is 5-6 hours' drive from Perth.

Brisbane and Gold Coast are good too, but should be more expensive than Western Australia. -- http://travelerfolio.com
