I also have a side question. How often does Basic start? I know that might sound like a dumb question, but everyone i know started in the summer time.

  1. BCT starts year round.  What you're referring to is what's called the "Summer Rush", which is the larger number of people who graduate school and immediately join the military.  Not real certain where Cav Scouts do their AIT, but I can tell you that you'll most likely going to be stationed in Ft Lewis, WA or Alaska.  I know more STRYKER units have been created since I got out in 2005, but that's where the majority of the  units are still (I believe).

  2. Which AIT? Technically for 19Delta Cavalry ( not Calvary) Scout you will have no AIT. It is a combination of Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training. It is called OSUT, One station unit training.  How often it depends.  Also, not everyone starts in the summer time though. Go talk to a recruiter take your tests and physicals and just see what dates they can give you for your basic and also see if you qualify for Cavalry Scout. Good luck

Just tell them you really want 19Delta!

  3. About every month or so, a new 19D OSUT (One Station Unit Training) cycle starts at Fort Knox, KY.  It's the same place they have OSUT for Tankers as well, but they're in the process of moving the Armor School (19D is part of the Armor branch) to Fort Benning and merging it with the Infantry School there into one big combined arms OSUT unit.  19D OSUT is 16 weeks long.

If you're thinking about being a 19D, keep in mind it's very challenging, both mentally and physically.  It used to be a big deal if you were a Cav Scout, but since the Iraq war started, they'll take just about anyone since it's a high demand MOS and have lowered their standards considerably.  There's three kinds of Cav Scouts now...Humvee Scouts, Bradley Scouts, and now Stryker Scouts.

Since Cav Scouts is a high demand MOS, you can get alot of goodies in your contract.  Depending how well you do on your ASVAB, you can get a large bonus, choice of duty station, additional schools, etc.

  4. 19D does not go to BCT or AIT. You'd attend OSUT (One Station Unit Training) which is a combination of BCT and AIT. You keep the same platoon and instructors throughout your training. (If you join as 19D make sure you get Airborne in your contract! Don't sign until they give it to you... it's awesome!)

  5. basic starts all the time. you will probably go to Ft. Sill. you will find out for sure when you enlist.
