  1. Hi You must be a little on your guard on the high ways for larger vehicles on smaller windy roads, but in most cases the roads are good in Greece. One hot spot going to Thessaloniki(Salonika) from Athens is the Notorious winding roads of Tempe its about half way up & is a place to go slow at & maybe stop & buy some traditional sweets from the local roadside vendors. Other than that you shouldn't have any trouble as the locals are very helpful.

  2. What time of year? August is relatively easy - school/work time is a nightmare in the centre of any city. Best to leave the car for longer trips out of the city.

Have a great time - I love Thessaloniki (and Athens) never been to Alexandropolis.

  3. You need international license first from your country.

Second, if you can drive standard fine, otherwise expect to spend a lot more money in car rental.

Third, the main road Athens-Thessaloniki-Alexandroupolis is just fine.

Make sure you take several rests, esp in Tempi, walk the suspended bridge to the small church, buy souvenirs and halva Farsalon, (a special pastry made only there and distributed over Greece).

Also, before you get there, make a stop in Thermopylae, (you know the movie "300" was inspired by the history that took place there)

If you have time to spend go to Pillion, (another great place to admire the Greek natural beauty)

Close to Thessaloniki, stop by in Vergina (LOL, hence my nick)the historical site full of ancient findings, among them the tombs of Phillip(Alexander's father) and his wife.

A lot of monuments all oven mainland and is going to be a trip to remember.

Make sure you buy a book with the road signs as they can be different from your place you live.

    Good luck
