I have no idea where to begin or where to look for information. I would like to go to the home and do hair and nail polish and that type of thing. Do I need some sort of business license? Any advice you can offer would be appreciated!!

  1. If you go through a program such as Mineral Girls, you shouldn't need to go through the formalities of business licensing, etc since you are an independent contractor. They do mineral makeup with "tweens" in mind-it's light, natural looking and more affordable than a lot of other cosmetics. www.mineralgirlz.com

Since you would be in a "party plan" job, you would have to keep track of all of your expenses and profits, etc and turn them in to the IRS with your tax return, but it is much simpler than going through the process of opening a full blown business. Trust me-I have been through both!

  2. Regarding licenses, look in your phone book for City Clerk or County Clerk and call them. Explain what your business will be and ask what licenses you will need. You will also need to contact the state department of revenue to get a sales tax account, since you will have to charge your customers sales tax and pay that to the state. Do you plan to sell lipstick, etc. or just charge for your time? If you are reselling stuff, you will need to find a supplier to buy products from at wholesale prices. They will probably have minimum order amounts and you'll have to pay up front for the first few orders you make. Lastly, you'll need to have some brochures and price lists printed that you can give out to people to drum up business.
