Is the backerboard necessary, or can I adhere the tile to the drywall behind the sink?

  1. it is needed to support the weight of the tile.  


  2. If your drywall is waterproof green board you can tile over it providing you have a good clean surface to adhere to.Make sure you seal the grout to prevent water damage.    

  3. you can adhere it directly to the drywall.

  4.   Right to the drywall is fine.. A type 2 mastic is best bet ( It resist s water a bit more.). You won t be getting that much water on the  bs to worry about, at least I assume not  lol.. Even w/ kids and normal washing of dishes you shouldn t  The dry wall should be at least primed to accept a mastic or any other tile glue..

  5. You can adhere the tile to the drywall. Just use a good mastic. I have done it several times.
