I started with my great-grandfather, and went back until I reached an ancestor, William Goble, who was born in Sussex, England around 1540; and died, same place, around 1593.

Unfortunately, I'm stuck here. I can't find anything further back. Any help is appreciated.

The parents dates don't look right, but I noticed there is another William Goble at the same site showing the birth year as 1560.  I'll see if I can find anything else, but its hard to verify facts with dates going that far back.  Congratulations on going as far a 1540!

Here is the other William Goble and link:

  2. You're doing very well for an English line.

The best I can suggest is to get admission into the archives of the local church. The clerics were the only people who read, wrote, and kept records about people back then.

1540 is not such a deplorable brick wall into which one might run..

    Happy hunting!

    **0_William GOBLE

Birth: ABT. 1540 in Sussex, England

Death: 1 MAY 1593 in Sussex, England

( NOTE--Burial of "Willmus Goble de Westergate" is recorded Aldingbourne, Sussex, England. Westergate is a village within a mile of Aldingbourne)

    His father: William [Willi] GOBLE

    **His Children (Spouse unknown)

    1_Thomas GOBLE b: BET. 1590 - 1610 in Sussex, England

    Daughter GOBLE

    William GOBLE b: 1582

    Elizabeth GOBLE b: 1588

    John GOBLE b: BEF. 1590

    (Or there is this listing):

    William GOBLE

Birth: 1540 in Westergate, West Sussex, England

Death: 01 MAY 1593 in Aldingbourne, West Sussex, England

            Marriage 1 Spouse Unknown

Son:  Thomas GOBLE b: 02 JAN 1590 in Aldingbourne, West Sussex, England

    William's parents: ????

    John Jean GOBLE

    Birth: 1536 in France

    Death: 1609 in Sussex, England

            Married:

    Joan SMITH

    Birth: 1536

    Death: in Sussex, England

(I KNOW the dates above  for his parents are wrong. They would have been only 4 years old in 1540--when William was born. I would rather say it was closer to 1520 or thereabouts.)

This listing for his father seems more likely:

    John GOBYLL\GOBLE

Birth:  ABT 1520 , Petworth, Sussex, England

His son --Willmi (William) GOBLE-- M--b. ABT 1544 in Petworth, Sussex, England

William's grandfather??--These sound more logical to me, given 20 years per generation

    JOHN GOBYLL I

Birth:  About 1489   Petworth, Sussex, England

    Death:  24 OCT 1551

    Or   possibly??--

    JOHN I GOBYLL

Birth:  About 1492   Duncton, Sussex, England (would have been 28 at John Goble's birth in 1520; 48 at William's)

    Death:  30 DEC 1553

Marriage: about 1519   Petworth, Sussex, England

(Again, the marriage year would be just right, for William's father's birth in 1520)

Possible father for above, maybe (no first name listed, however)??

    MR. GOBYLL

Birth:  About 1460   Sutton & Duncton Manor, , Sussex, England

    Death:  1525

    Surname: Goble

This picturesque surname is of Medieval English origin and is a dialectal variant of Godbold, itself from a Norman personal name "Godebald", composed of the Germanic elements "god", good, or "got", god, with "bald", bold or brave. In the modern idiom the variants include Godbold, Godball, Gobat and Goble. The following examples illustrate the name development from 1086, before the name was used as a surname, Godeboldus (Domesday Book, 1086). Adam Filius Godboldi (Essex) and after 1206 (see below). Henry Gobaud (1242, Fees of Devon), John Gobant (1316, Warwickshire), John Godebold (1317, Fees) and John Godball (1485). Amongst the sample recordings in London is the christening of Thomas Godbolt on August 29th 1622 at St. Andrew's, Holborn. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of William Godebald, which was dated 1206, in the "Curia Rolls of Bedfordshire", during the reign of King John, known as "Lackland", 1199 - 1216. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
