Question:

I am transfering my car title and I may still owe traffic tickets. Is this going to be a problem?

I recently paid off my car and the title is being sent to me. I lived in both Michigan and Illinois in the recent past, and there is a strong possibility that I owe parking tickets in both states (I definitely owe in IL).

I just sold my car, and when I receive the title, I'm going to give it to the buyer. If he takes the title to the DMV here in IL to register the car in his name, are they going to tell him about the tickets, or is that simply my problem? How do I find out what I owe?

Advice? If I absolutely have to pay, I'll probably have to work out a payment plan. Will that delay his ability to register the car. I transferred a different car' title in the past, and there was no issue of traffic tickets, though I believe I had one or tickets on the car at the time.

  1. Traffic fines are charged against your insurance and not the car you drive. Selling your car won't make them go after the car's new buyer, but they will still come after you.

Just pay the tickets off and you won't have to worry about the problem.
