  1. I think you will be fine with english most of the time, if you are going to Vienna or Salzburg you will easily find english guided tours or you can book them via internet.

there are also some really useful city guides like this one here: http://www.wien.info/article.asp?IDArtic...

see also the austrian travel guide at http://www.austria.info/xxl/_site/us/_ar...

where you find detailed information on what to see, where to eat, interactive maps, picture galleries, etc. etc. if you need travel information there is also a hotline to the austrian travel information center where you will get all information needed.

I think the best way is to inform about the numerous activities and places to do and see via internet or telephone.

If you need any further information you can contact me whenever you want.

    greets from austria,

    ines

  2. Generally spoken you'll be just fine with speaking English - as Austria is a quite tourisitc country we are used to guests from abroad and almost everybody is speaking English.

But of course it is always a sign of respect when you are learning some common phrases.

    For example:

    Danke - Thank you

Bitte - please as well as you are welcome

Ein grosses Bier, bitte. - A big glass of beer please.

When you need more of these phrases or have more specific questions about the language - write me a mail - as I am Austrian I guess I'll be able to help!

  3. Just for survival english is enough to speak in hotels and restaurants in all main tourist locations.

Most of the younger people can speak a bit of english.

If you know some german is much better. Austrian, especially east-austrians, are very kind people and enjoy a lot the little pleasures of life (Sachertorte...yum!).

Have a nice time in Austria.

  4. Yes, you'll get by with English. Depending on where you go, you will almost certainly find somebody speakign at least a bit of English. It's a compulsory subject in school, so at least the younger people will be able to communicate on a basic level with you.
