Question:

I am traveling to Italy, from Cote D'Azur- How long will it take me to drive to Italian Riviera and Tuscany?

I like to take the train to Venice from there, and then to Rome. I am wondering if I'll have enough time to drive by Italian Riviera, stop for lunch, spend the night somewhere in Tuscany ( doesn’t have to be Florence) and then take a train from there the next day. Is this feasible?

  1. It would take you approx. 5 to 6 hours to get to northern tuscany from Montecarlo/Nice area, assuming there is no traffic.

I assume you already realize that now most of Europe is travelling, so highways are very busy, and so are hotel. finding a room in the touristic areas is almost impossible, it means doing legwork.

I'll add that a quick trip as you mention can be done time-wise, but would not serve the purpose to see any of the nice areas in France OR Italy... you'd drive past, but without the time for stopping, the Cinqueterre, Portofino, Lucca, Siena, Pisa.... is that really the goal?

  2. You can make either way in one day or less, from the french border to Venice, and from Venice to Rome.

    For train schedules look at

    http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

and figure out yourself which way to go and where to stop/stay.  Trains are running rather frequently compared to australia so you might have many choices.

  3. just go here and do offers http://www.*************/index.php?ref=4...

  4. Since you haven't specified where on the Cote d'Azur, I have taken the distance from Nice to Florence:

It is 425.3 kms.  about a 4 hour drive...

You could do the whole trip by car just as easy as by train.

    Florence to Venice: 274 kms.

    Florence to Rome: 287 kms

If you insist on taking the train...

Florence is a good axe point to catch trains

Florence to Venice:   is a 3 hour trip There are 6 trains during the day (price $61 US in 1st class $45 US in 2nd class)

Florence to Rome: is about 90 minutes  and there are about 22 trains during the day (price $65 US in 1st. class  & $49 US in 2nd . class)

    (check www.trenitalia.com for train schedules)

    Buon Viaggio!

  5. try yahoo maps. it will tell you length of time.
