I believe the deadline to drive to Mexico and not need a passport is 01/31/08. Also, it was mentioned I need a tourist card. It can be purchased at the border, but can I get one from the Mexican Consulte in my area?

  1. You will need to be fluent in Spanish. The passport requirement goes into effect January 1, 2008. You won't be allowed back into the US until you obtain a passport and that means you will have to wait in Mexico four months while your request is processed. Being fluent in Spanish will help you get by while waiting for the passport.

The tourist Visa can be obtained at any consulate, but is easiest to obtain at the same time you pay the entry fees for your vehicle at the port of entry.

If you enter the Sonora Visa Free zone, you won't have to obtain a Visa or pay entry fees for your car.

  2. The deadline  for passports for LAND travel is June2008.so you can still drive to Mexico without a passport till then.  See website below for official announcement.  It is much more efficient to get your tourist card at the border.  Going to the Mexican consulate is a big deal...lots of waiting...unless the one near you is dramatically  diff. than the one in Denver.  Youmust get a car permit at first town over the border if you are going more than 12 miles into Mexico ...unless you are only going to Sonora or Baja.   You will get a window sticker and paperwork.  Must also have cr. card for them to imprint and save...there is a large fine if you try to leave the country without your car.  Must have your license, registration, title, or if car is still financed, must have letter of permission from lender to take car to Mexico.  You CAN get this permit at the consulte and it is EASIER if you do.  So, if you need the permit, can ask about tourist card at same time.  , you will need Mxican car ins.  See websites below for info and my fav. ins. company.  I may have rattled on with more info than you nee, but havefound folks often need this stuff.  Have a great trip.  Oh, and if youneed a road trip planner for Mexicon highways, email me.. I got a couple.

  3. Those traveling by land or sea must present two forms of valid identification such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate and a driver's license or other identification issued by a state or official agency.

U.S.citizens may use a passport or other documents when traveling by land or sea, but passports will not be formally required for AIr travel until January 23, 2008.

t's a good idea to get a passport if you're planning to travel to Mexico, whether or not it is an official requirement. A passport is the best form of international identification and having one may help you avoid hassles.

June 1, 2009 – The deadline for all Western Hemisphere travel, including LAND border travel. The specific requirements for the land border crossing will be outlined before this date

U.S. citizens do not require a visa or a tourist card for tourist stays of 72 hours or less within "the border zone," defined as an area between 20 to 30 kilometers of the border with the U.S., depending on the location. U.S. citizens traveling as tourists beyond the border zone or entering Mexico by air must pay a fee to obtain a tourist card, also known as an FM-T, available from Mexican consulates, Mexican border crossing points, Mexican tourism offices, airports within the border zone and most airlines serving Mexico. The fee for the tourist card is generally included in the price of a plane ticket for travelers arriving by air.

Tourists wishing to travel beyond the border zone with their car must obtain a temporary import permit or risk having their car confiscated by Mexican customs officials.

  4. yes you can get a tourist card in the u s a at the mexican consulte. i all ways get it at the border for 6 months, the cost 25 dollars.

  5. Its 1-01-08.  If you do not speak Spanish I would get a passport before traveling to Mexico.  Tourist card costs nothing, please do not pay for this.  It is the same thing as a visa, on the plane you will fill out the visa application and when you go thru customs at the airport the first thing the customs person will say is, passaporte?
