  1. The Hotel Cosmopolita was outstanding!

My wife and I stayed there on our honeymoon a little over a year ago.

Small, boutiquish, very close to shopping and to the Colliseum, etc.  Very friendly staff.

Like everywhere else in Europe, the rooms are small, and the showers even smaller, and there's not much on TV in English other than CNN, but that is all standard across Europe unless you're paying big bucks.

The Cosmopolita was overall very good for the price.

I had previously stayed in Rome at the even nicer Capo D'Africa.  A tad more expensive, and a tad further out (although closer to the Collisuem).  Both are worth checking out.

Weather-wise, the average high around then would be upper 50's, average low about 40, in farenheit, and that is on the tail end of the rainy season, so you will probably need an umbrella.

Bring good walking shoes too, as public transportation is not great there.

  2. ranieri...

it is via 20 settembre, very closed to the historic centre, very nice, and very well comunicated with Termini station, and all the buses. It is in an 18 century building, and the price is good enough

  3. The weather will be cold (45 - 50f or so) and most likely rainy in February.  We usually stay at the Hotel Smeraldo, near Largo Argentina and Campo di Fiori.  It is close to many historic sites, restaurants and a block from the Elletrico (electric) bus line that stops at Campo di Fiori, and goes up to the bus station one direction and over to the Vatican the other way - very convenient.  Down side - it is a bit pricey (135 euro if memory serves, but most of Rome is expensive) and hard to find if you don't know where it is.

  4. I was in Rome for a week over Thanksgiving.  Now is a good time to go because it's not as crowded.

The best location to stay in Rome from a site-seeing perspective is near the Pantheon or Largo Argentina.  Largo Argentina is a hub for the bus system which gets you to more places than the underground.

The Termini is the hub for the underground trains - but I wouldn't stay in a hotel near there because it's a sketchy neighborhood at night.

I don't know your price range so can't recommend anything specific.  Rome is not a cheap place to stay, so count on spending $200 per night even for modest accomodation.  The really nice places are $300+ per night.

  5. I've been to Rome last month for a week end and it was very

cold, but english people are used to that weather. We stayed

at Hotel Suisse which is very close to Trinità dei Monti and Piazza di Spagna (www.info@hotelsuisserome.com).

They are absolutely kind, the hotel is very nice in an old building and it's not too much expensive,if you consider where it is.Be careful if you go in Stazione Termini area, especially at night. Hope I helped.

  6. The average high temperature in Rome in February is around 56 degrees F (average daily low is 40 degrees F). February averages 7 days with precipitation in February.

I use the venere.com site for booking hotels here in Italy. They have a large database. You can use a map to sort for a particular district in the city you're interested in and then sort by price, guest rating,... http://en.venere.com/italy/. The site has a lot of reviews by previous guests to get an idea of what to expect from the area, the hotel, and the staff. I've found a hotel within two minutes of Piazza San Marco during Carnevale on two days notice using the site.

Any of the central districts in Rome are convenient for sightseeing. The area around the Roma Termini train station is cheaper, but a little further from the sites. It is still walkable though, and there are good public transportation connections.

The Trevi, Colosseo Foro Romano, Pantheon, Navonna, and Piazza di Spagna districts, as shown on the venere map, are all within easy walking distance of all the major sights.

It isn't clear what you would consider as "not expensive". If you're looking for cheap and close to the attractions in Rome, a good option may be the Hotel Romano http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/kolosse... It's very close to the Forum & Colosseum and within walking distance of two metro stops and the Termini train station.

If you're looking for something a little more upscale, the Hotel Regno and Hotel Cesari, both located between the Pantheon Trevi Fountain, are very good. Hotel Regno is a particularly good bargain. http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/fontana... http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome/pantheo...

You might also be interested in a accomodations at a convent or monastery in Italy. These tend to be some of the best lodging bargains available. There are a number of them in Rome. In some places in Italy, a monestary stay may be free. see: http://www.monasterystays.com/?show=page... or http://www.santasusanna.org/comingtorome... for information.

My brother and his wife stayed in one and recommended it. A nephew and his wife also stayed in a convent in Rome and agreed it was a good experience.
