I am traveling to the south of France in September for 3 weeks and am trying to figure out my itinerary.?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am a single female traveling alone, so any ideas keeping that in mind would be great. Thanks!!

East is great (Marseille, Nice, Canne, Antibe, and Monaco)

It depends on how much money you want to spend as well. Some cities (eg Monaco) are really GREAT, but very expensive.

In these area, you shoul also visit the so-called "arriere pays" which is, actually, the name for small vilages, mountains and forest, located a few km away from theh sea side.

You will enjoy it, I am sure. You chose the right period (all tourists will be away)

The south of France is a big place: west or east?

Personally, I would suggest east, but then, I am biased... There are so many beautiful places there, that it is difficult to choose. Maybe you want to see some of the Roman sites (Nimes, Vaison-la-Romaine, Arles), or go to the Luberon (Gordes, Roussillon, Apt...). Les Baux (in the Alpilles) is quite beautiful too. Why don't you start from Marseille, great city, with a nice area called Le Panier that you absolutely want to see (but in the daytime though). Marseille is safer than one thinks, but if you are alone, and don't know the city, it might be better for you to stay in Aix-en-Provence: a small, gorgeous city. More expensive though. From there, you can go to all the places I mentioned above. Plus small villages on the coast such as La Ciotat or Cassis. You will need a car to do all this, unless you don't mind spending lots of time in coaches and trains.

Oh yes, if you like old abbeys: next to Gordes, you can't miss the Abbaye de Sénanque, an old Cistercian abbey, as well as the other two in Provence, Silvacane and Thoronet.

By the way, September is a great time for travelling in the south of France: weather should be good, and there will be far less tourists.
