  1. Ausgust is at the end of our winter so it's still slightly chilly.  If you're staying in Melbourne and Sydney around the CBD the temperature is usually between about 12 - 15 degrees (celcius) - it tends to rain a bit in August but unless you visit the colder parts of Australia there won't be any snow!  Most people wear layers so cope with the chilly morning that they can take off during the day - it's fashionable and practical.  There's a heap of stuff to do in Sydney and Melb - if you're only there for a few days check out things in the main area - in Sydney there's the Opera House, the Harbor Bridge, The Rocks (historic area) as well as lots of nightlife - a casino, many bars, clubs.  There's also a really cool ghost tour I did when I turned 18 (can't remember what it's called) but they take you on a tour of the seedier parts of Sydney in a hotted up hearse...it's strange but in a good way.  In Melbourne there's lots of museums and art galleries to check out and a really good nightlife - huge indie music scene - lots of pubs and the like.  Hope you have a great trip.

  2. August is their winter.  I'd pack a variety of clothes if I were you.  I don't think it would get too cold there, but better to be prepared.  I'd pack mostly shorts, jeans, short sleeve and 3/4 sleeve shirts, sweaters and light jacket.  I don't think you'll need a heavy coat but you never know.    I went to Australia in Jan, their summer, and it was typical summer weather in both places.  Interesting things to do:  The blue mountains outside of Sydney, the Opera House tour;  Melbourne: Visit Apollo Bay outside of Melbourne.  The drive out there is like California's PCH.  Spectacular!
