  1. The only thing i would add to the 2 previous answers is there are atm's all over, so you dont need to take a ton of travellers checks with you.

if you want to bargain, and not many tourist area's really bargain, you need cash.

if you are just in tourist zone's plastic works everywhere.

if you are driving, the one pain in the butt is the gas stations (Pemex) only take cash, mainly only pesos, but sometimes USD.

it is amazing how little cash you need tho.

    have fun,

    Neil.

  2. Exchange your money in Mexico, but do not go to a money exchange store go to a Banamex or Bancomer bank, you will get a better rate and no service charge.

You can use your credit cards and ATM's to withdraw money but make sure you are aware of the currency conversion fees, they can be outrageous.

  3. ALWAYS exchange you money in the country you are going TO because you get the best exchange rates.  Also, exchange at a BANK and exchange as much as you think you will need... and if you do all 3 of these things, you will get the best rate.

  4. It will be very difficult to get Mexican pesos in Canada. The best thing is to change your money here in Mexico at any reputed bank or Money exchange (there's a lot of them at the airport).

Credit card companies will rip you off.

  5. When possible, use your credit card. They obtain the best rate.

  6. My husband and I are from Canada and we're traveling to Mexico in January.  We plan on doing the money exchange here in Canada and plan on taking US$.  We don't want to be burdened with finding a bank and exchaning money while out there.  We'll also bring along plastic, just in case of emergency, but don't plan on using it.  I've read horror stories on TripAdvisor of travelers who have stayed at resorts in Mexico and have used their credit cards, only to have someone at the resort get ahold of their credit card number and go on shopping sprees.

  7. The Canadian dollar =11 Mexican peso. This can guide you when you want to exchange your money. The airport is a good place. American dollars are accepted every where so that is another option for you. (Canadian $ is about equal now)
