So my question is, what is the average cost of living there compared to the cost of living in Boston. I am wondering how much money I should bring, and if maybe I should bring only a little cash and mostly credit cards?

  1. **** bunch of retarted that said that Belo Horizonte is ugly. You obviously have a very bad taste.

    Sounds ugly to you?

It's spelled "Minas Gerais", and Belo Horizonte is considered  one of the best cities in Brazil to live.

  2. Credit Card (Visa/Master) are widely accepted. Debit cards as well.

Cost should be around the same in my opinion.

Remember the Real is worth 0,50 of the dolar.

So a meal at McDonalds here costs around R$ 18,00 (USD 9,00).

Some things can be very cheap, but mostly the cost of living in Brazil has gone up. The Dolar is at record lows in 6 years.

Also depends a lot if you are going to a big city or small town, as far as accomotation, transportation etc.

Big cities in Minas Gerais are not very pretty, but small towns, historic ones (Ouro Preto, etc...) and nature in teh country side are very nice indeed.

    Roads are not very good.

The local´s accent in portuguese is very unique, and quite annoying.

  3. I lived in Belo Horizonte for eight years, and I love it!

The food in Minas Gerais is the best in Brazil and it's very cheap. Don't leave without trying one of the many all you can eat typical Minas cuisine restaurants (I recommend Dona Lucinha, but you can get other suggestions in tourist brochures you can find at the airport), and the barbecue restaurants. The prices are unbelievable!

For souvenirs, check out the fair at Afonso Pena Avenue every Sunday morning. You can find from key rings to clothes and even furniture there. Watch out for pickpockets! There's nothing worse than losing all your credit cards, cash and papers in a foreign land!

You won't need to bring much cash since there are plenty of ATM machines everywhere. It's wise to avoid those at night, though. The ones in shopping malls are safer.

  4. Yahoo!!! you will visit my state, Minas Gerais. I am from Juiz de fora, a litle city next Belo horizonte. My City is the first in all the South America to have eletricity.

You will need approximately R$2000,00. It is some $1002.00.

Welcome to our country and enjoy.

  5. you cannot compare the cost of living in the USA to brasil. In brasil is much cheaper. USA dollar value is double compared to local Reais. Healthy and good food in Brasil is great and cheap at supermarkets and restaurants. Clothes however are no cheap. Before going I would recommend you to exchange something like US300.00 into reais for food, cabs etc... credit cards work very well as well as debit cards. Be careful with them to avoid beeing cloned. Most of hotels accpet credit cards. Belo Horizonte (BH)  is the capital of the minas gerais state and a big city, not very beautiful but nice people. On sundays you have the crafts market where you will find everything. Minas gerais has some beautiful historical cities like Tiradentes and Ouro Preto. You can get there by bus from BH. I know an american guy who moved to BH one year ago and he is teaching english for a living. He loves the place and people. If you need cheap airfare to Brasil go to www.brol.com. Good luck and enjoy Brasil.
