Question:

I am treating the gas tank of my Honda CM400A - it has a "reserve" tank. How do I get the treatments to all?

I cannot get all of the liquid out of the tank and figure it must be in the "reserve" spot. It must be completely dry before the final treatment. How are these tanks designed ? Suggestions for drying and getting the sealant equally to all parts ?

  1. It's just all one big single tank. The petcock opens at one level for regular running and at another, lower, level for reserve,  That's why when you switch to reserve you often get a bunch of rust laden particles in your fuel flow, plugging up your carburetor. And that is basicaly why you are sealing the tank.

If you fill the tank and leave it in the RESERVE position, you will eventually run out of gas. Really, completely out of gas.  No reserve.

You will have to remove the petcock valve, so you can drain the tank completely.  Make sure to clean the petcock filter of all the gunk, I suggest you put an inline fuel filter ahead of the carbs.

To get the rust out you may need to put a handful of stainless steel nut and bolts in the tank and shake the heck out of it. Wash it. If it come clean and shiny, good, if not do it again. Use methyl alchol to combine with and remove the water before you seal it. (Gas treatment, is mostly methyl [wood] alcohol, designed to clear water out of your tank.)

    Good luck!

  2. ok first there not a reserve tank inside your tank but a small line.... ok... remove the on off swicth from the bottom of the  tank you should see it.....its about three inches long which fills with gas when you fill it up and it stay there til you use it...so if you have taken that out of the bottom of the and you got the cap off your ready to put in the sealer.... put some tape over the bottom and then the top and round it a round to make sure you coat everything then let it sit for a day or two and your good to go

  3. The reserve is not a tank within the tank. The reserve is done with the petcock. The petcock has two levels it feeds from.A tall inlet and a low inlet. When you go to reserve it feeds through the lower inlet.

By the way did you remove the petcock? If not you should right away because it will clog up with sealant. And the just leave the tank open to air dry without the cap on.

    Yes that is correct Kathy
