  1. Get them to apply for a pre-paid Maestro card. That can be used to pay for it.

  2. Yes, you will need to present a credit card when you pick up the car. When you hire the car, the 'basic' insurance has a excess, which is normally about 500 euros. The car hire company will use the credit card to cover this excess. So If your parents have a accident, and the car is damaged, they will have to pay up to 500 euros for the damage. This is normally specified in the 'small print' of the car hire agreement. It is not possible to hire a car in any country without presenting a credit card when collecting the car.

  3. Try one of those credit cards you get for gifts, they work just like a credit card, but make sure that the car hire will accept it first.

  4. Sorry, I live in Spain and they will need a credit card to be able to hire a car. You can hire one with your credit card but for security reasons they will need to produce it over here and in their name.

  5. Wait until they get to the airport at their destination; then they just go to any of the many car hire outlets there and can pay cash.  They will always have a car available.
