  1. ok so if your best strokes our fly and back work on breast because it is a real killer on time if you don't have a good technique

  2. Work on breaststroke. My coach says that most breaststrokers turn into really good IM'ers. Breastroke is the power stroke. Most olympains make their move on the breaststroke. Light kicks on backstroke and fast arms so that you can save some leg power for the breaststroke.

    Hope I helped =)

  3. I got some tips.

First- when you push off the blocks. Streamline as far as you can. Don't take a breathe til you do 4-5 butterfly strokes.

2nd- kick HARD on your backstroke. And relax your arms, don't just flail.

3rd- On breaststroke, push off the wall and streamline as far as possible and keep your strokes strong and relaxing.

4th- Freestyle, just sprint all out but stay efficient.

I am just guessing 1:10 is the state cut for the 100 IM time.

    Hope that helps =D

  5. Swim as fast as you can in the butterfly and backstroke to compensate for your weaker strokes. Personally butterfly is my weakest stroke and backstroke is my strongest. I utilize the backstroke and have gotten my 100IM time down to 1:04.

  6. When you're racing you should take advantage of your strengths so I'd go ahead and take the front end of your race strong. But since you're trying to drop time then you need to look at where you're making mistakes that can be addressed or corrected.

Take a page from Michael Phelps. He was interviewed after the Olympic trials in Omaha and asked what he could do to 'improve on his performance'. He didn't say 'well I'm the record holder in Fly, Back, and Free so I better work on my Breast' or 'I need to take advantage of the front half of the race since I'm the best in the world in the Fly and Back'. He mentioned the part(s) of his race he could improve on the easiest and quickest. He mentioned his turns...which actually is one of his strengths. I thought that was very interesting.

What can you improve on to cut those three seconds? As a coach and an ex olympic trials qualifier I know there are many areas in the IM that you need to practice. On the other hand without watching you swim or knowing what you can change the quickest it would be difficult to give you a straight answer.

From my experience I'd say two places you could start with are the walls and your strategy.

    1. The walls: your start and turns

Strengthen your streamline and kicks off the walls. Make sure your transitions from one stroke to the next are quick and smooth.

    2. Strategy: Is the 100 a sprint for you or is it considered more of mid-distance?

If it's a sprint then you need to have 'the pedal to the medal' from start to finish. If not then you need to swim the front half strong but without over-exerting yourself, attack the breaststroke, and bring the free home with a strong kick (I say it this way because I too am a strong butterflyer and backstroker while breaststroke is my nemesis).

Good luck..I'd like to hear from you when you break 1:10.
