Question:

I am trying to find a child that my mother supposedly put up for adoption, any suggestions on where to start?

The child was born in New York in the early 60's and that is all the information that I have. My mother refuses to acknowledge the fact that my grandparents told about this. She will not give out any information on the child. So I have very little to go on and I am not real sure on how to start a search on my own. Any information would be appreciated. I feel that all adoptee's if they would like should have the right to know information about their biological families. My mother has some medical issues and I would like to pass this information on.

  1. Register with the Dept of Health because the NYS Dept, of Health has a special registry set up for adoptees, siblings and birth mothers.

    http://www.health.state.ny.us/vital_reco...

  2. Since the records are sealed, it may be difficult for you to get a significant amount of information.

New York DOH Adoption Registry:  http://www.health.state.ny.us/vital_reco...  (There is a service for parents to provide medical records to their adopted children.)

There are a lot of resources out there for families looking to reunify.  Try http://www.dmoz.org/Home/Family/Adoption...

  3. I could be difficult unless you know the exact birthdate, but not impossible.  There are alot of sites where people who were adopted post their information in search for their biological mother (they often know what her last name was).  Here is a link to a popular site.

If you do know the birthdate, you could look into obtaining records through government files since you are a direct relative (if the adoptee has also registered).  Try this link:

    http://www.health.state.ny.us/vital_reco...

And another site that has some good info:

    http://www.nyadoption.org/

    Good Luck.

  4. Go to ancestry.com there is a section for searching for adopted people.

I would also quiz your grandparents more. Weather they know the adoption agency that placed the baby. Write down everything so you can keep track of the information.
