There aren't any contacts made to take care of both problems. Does anyone have the same problem, and have you found contacts that are comfortable? I have tried Bausch and Lomb multi focal and they made my eyes dry out to fast. I tried Accuvue for astigmatism with one contact for distance and one for reading and they were more comfortable and didn't dry out as much, but I haven't been able to adjust to the different vision in both eyes. Thanks for any suggestions!

  1. I went through this.  Tried everything and finally found out some answers.

First of all, the mall stores will not give you the time to explore the options.  I think I went through 6 pairs and trials before we got it right and we still tinker when I go back every year.  Go to a private practice.

Second, the near/far split works best with women for some reason.  Worked for me only in the day, but could not drive at night.

As I have really bad eyes, my doc fit me for the best distance and I wear "readers" for close.  My lenses are comfortable, I can see the golf ball a mile away, I have good night vision.

Yes, "readers" are a pain, but you have to make a choice sometimes.

  2. you're right, there arent many that do. there is a brand called proclear multi focal toric lenses which we have fit, but havent had much success with them. there is always the option of the gas perm (not a soft lens) bifocal contact. with this lens you need to have patience because the doctor will probably not get the rx on the first try, it will take several. also, they are not as comfortable as soft lenses.

if you dont like either of these options, you can always do distance only contacts w/ a pair of readers for when you want to do things close up.

i would talk to your doctor and see what he would recommend.

  3. C-Vue toric multifocal has been showing real promise in my practice.  You get both the astigmatism correction and the bifocal.  As with any bifocal contact lens, there is a bit of a compromise between distance and near (not quite as much as the mono-vision you mentioned trying), but I find it provides very functional vision.

If you have dry eyes, this will need to be addressed by your doctor.  You certainly need to have enough tears to support your contact lenses.
