Question:

I am trying to find a way to make a fire pit!?

A man was just at my house telling me it would be $2,456 to build me a fire pit. I think this is nuts! I am sure that I can do this myself for a lot less. Just a small one that is in the ground with fire stones. Anyone have any great ideas for me to start with?

  1. Go to a truck junk yard and buy a "centerless" rim. They are about 22" in diameter. Clear the area of grass and any other combustables and lay 4 bricks down. Set the rim on top the bricks and build your fire. This is what most campgrounds I have stayed at have. This way you can also use refrigerator shelves on top for grilling.

  2. That's crazy, thats way over priced for just a fire pit!

Here a way easier solution and would cost you no more that $150.

go to a hardware store that sells bricks, pavers, etc.  buy some wood or landscaping ties to frame the ground (keep from grass growing in), dig your grass out in your framed area, level it, (example 5X5 square) get about 1/3 yard of pea gravel...buy enough fire pit blocks to make the design you want.  Make a circle in the center with fire pit blocks (self forming to a circle) , (check to make sure its level, it will form better) in the center of your framed area.  Fill the area with pea gravel  and a thin layer inside the pit.  Put another layer of bricks on top (finished now if just a basic fire pit is wanted,)  If you want to add a grill (great for outdoor cooking), you can buy the grill to fit these fire pit blocks, add  more bricks...see link for some ideas.  You'll get the idea.

They used fancier blocks in this link.
