I am trying to find out about where i live through old maps and papers.?

i am looking for a map of where i live and other details about it. there are many building foundations where buildings have been knocked down and i would like images maps or details about these buildings. if you could give me a place to find very detailed maps on line for free it would be greatly apreciated

  1. Where do you live? Some cities, states, local historical societies, museums, state archives and other institutions put scans of old plat maps, fire department maps and the like online, but coverage is spotty--available for some places and not others. To answer the question would require knowing the city you live in.

    If you are willing to go to a library, check on the Sanborn Atlas collection. Those were put together for most US cities and give detailed maps of the city at the times they were compiled, maps showing buildings and how they were used. Most large public libraries and university libraries have collections for their local areas.

    Finally the Library of Congress has an immense collection of such maps, but most of them are as yet not online.

  2. Google satellite maps.

    These maps zoom to sections of about 20,000 sq. feet.  If you know where you live, just hone in on the property.
