I don't care what type of transportation and I would be leaving there to return to STL, MO on 3 Sep

Have you bid on flights on expedia.com, hotwire.com, and priceline.com?  It's a long drive, but you could definitely consider doing that, too, depending on the flight prices you find.  Maybe also check Amtrak?

You could post your need on craigslist, though I must say that online hitchiking seems as dangerous to me as actual hitchhiking, but maybe not. And this time of year, there could be kids going back to college that might get you close enough for a cheap bus ride.

Bus from St. Louis to Dover is $258 round trip on Greyhound site.
