Question:

I am trying to format and reinstall os on iMac G3?

The instructions I was given was to insert the o/s disc into the cd drive, reboot and select the utilities and format the drie. It also says to hold down the 'C' key while rebooting. I have tried this many times, and it spits out the cd and starts up. Is there something I am doing wrong? It is a slot load cd player and the o/s is Mac OS version 10.4.7, Disc version 1.0. This is the original 2 disc set, yet the splash screen says it is Mac 9.1. Any suggestions please?

  1. I have the exact same problem. It seems like the latest OS compatible with G3 processor is Mac OS X 10.2.8  or at most Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger . Check the Wikipedia article on Power Macintosh G3 (Blue & White), under the OS section.

BTW, where can I get such an old OS ??

  2. I would definately try to contact Apple directly about this problem. Especially considering you have Tiger and it's saying you have 9.1 weird?

  3. "Is there something I am doing wrong?"

    Yes:

If your iMac G3 currently has Mac OS version 10.4.7 installed AND your OS disks have Mac 9.1, you have the wrong OS disks.

Call the person you bought it from and ask them for the TIGER OS disks.
