there for several years but quit to raise my kids. Now I would like to re-enter the work force and get this old job back. I left on good terms and gave my proper 2 week notice and was known as a good performer. I talked to my older supervisor and he said he would love to have me back but HR really did not like rehires because in their experience rehires never stayed. He said its up to them but its been 2 weeks and I have not heard anything and he said not to call them just let them call me in their timing. I am now wondering if I should look elsewhere and just wondered if anybody had experience with this type of situation.

  1. I don't know why your manager said not to call HR unless he was trying to be sly about it and not tell you directly that you don't have a chance of being hired back. I would call HR and ask as there is no additional harm in doing so.

The bigger question is why did you quit only to go back? This isn't very typical.

  2. You should be looking around for other opportunities while you wait for an answer - it could take a while, if it works out at all.  This is true for any job search - you keep looking until you get a firm offer from the company.

Do you know if your old job is available?  Isn't there someone they hired to replace you?  If the job is not open, and there is nothing currently open for you, you have to wait until a suitable position opens up.

Regardless of why he said not to contact H.R., the reality of this situation is that your old manager is your best hope in this situation, and if you go against his specific request, you will lose his support in this situation, and possibly in the future, when you may need him as a reference.

Be patient, but again, keep your options open and keep applying to as many applicable jobs as you can find, and you will have a job offer soon, whether with your old company or a new one.
