I am trying to get rid of tree roots in my flower garden, need ideas. thank you?

Best way is to dig around stump area and chop them as low as poss. Tie a rope around them and pull out. Don't use a ordinary car for this. Tree rotting chemicals out there. Old fashioned way was to hammer in 6" old rusty nails which rot them, but this is a very slow process.
