I am trying to hook up a DVD recorder & a VCR to a TV with cable but no cable box.

Hi there. Coax cable from the wall, to your VCR. Then from VCR to the coax port on your television. The DVD player will hook up through RCA jacks. the yellow, red and white cables. Your tv will remain on channel 3, and you change channels on your VCR. This is how you are able to record on the VCR. You hit the tv/video button to change the feed to pull the DVD signal.

So channel 3 on your tv is the same cable or not.  Your other boxes should have setting in the menu to output on channel 3 also.  

You didn't mention where your tv signal is coming from in the first place or what particular problem you are having
